DEVOTIONALS

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF SOMEONE DESCRIBED YOU AS MEEK?

SCRIPTURE:
“Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth.”
(Matthew 5:5)

MEDITATION:
In His typical fashion,
Jesus said something that was revolutionary and probably shocking
to those whose lives were being governed by the way of the world.

The world would have us to believe things like:
“Blessed are the clever and boisterous,
for they shall receive the admiration others”.
“Blessed are the aggressive, for they shall receive a successful career”.
“Blessed are the rich, for they shall receive a world of friends
and a house full of material possessions”.

Jesus in His awareness of human nature
knew that people ultimately want to live the best life they can live.
He recognized this human desire and used it when He equated meekness
with getting the best we can get, and being the best we can be.

Jesus knew that both meekness and humbleness are gifts from God.
We weren’t given those gifts to admire, but to put to use.
He was telling the world that if we want to find the key to happiness,
and if we want to enjoy living as it should be enjoyed,
then we need to learn to be meek.

What exactly does it mean to be meek?
The dictionary equates it to a quiet and gentle attitude.
It doesn’t mean that we sit alone, seldom speak,
and allow others to take advantage of us.
It means that we have the wisdom to know when to speak,
and when to ‘let it go’.
There are some things that cross our path that we may not like,
but we are wise enough to know when we should avoid making it an issue.

From my years of working in the corporate environment,
I can speak from experience that much more can be accomplished
through gentle words and approaches, than with vehement arguments.
In fact, if you are a manager, never forget to treat your staff members
the way you would like to be treated – it works.
It creates a much more pleasant working environment where each person feels
that he or she is an important part of a positive team that is ready to help each other.
It is no surprise that Jesus said,
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31)

The worldly standards would have us to believe
that being meek means being weak.
The truth is, it is quite the opposite.
It takes a strong person to exhibit meekness and humbleness.
It takes someone
who is comfortable in their own skin and their relationship with the Lord.
It is a characteristic of someone who has a gentle strength.

ACTION:
Have you bought into the world approach to happiness?
If so, how is it working out for you?
Doesn’t it make sense that the Creator
knows what brings happiness to His creations?
If we are told that being meek and humble is the key,
then we should not only believe it,
but also strive to develop those characteristics.

Pray,
“Heavenly Father, thank You for providing so much information in Your
Word, including a roadmap to happiness and joyous living. Forgive me for
not accepting Your instructions as truth. Teach me how to follow the
guidelines for happiness that Your Word has provided. Help me truly
reflect the meekness and humility of Jesus in my own life.”

About Don Woodruff

Retired from FedEx and dedicated to sharing God's Word with others. I send out devotionals weekly and have written two books: "The Crucifixion Catalyst / Unspoken Messages From God To Believers" (published and available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble **out of print**) and "I'm Saved Now What?" (unpublished). I am currently working on a third one that will be a Daily Devotional. The devotionals on my Blog have been viewed by people in all 50 states and over 80 foreign countries. I sincerely believe the Lord provides the content for the devotionals and in 2013 He “tasked” me with distributing them and storing them on my Blog. They are free and I will not solicit any donations. I hope you enjoy them and feel free to leave comments if one of them speaks to you personally, or if you have a suggestion.
