BENEFITS OF READING, KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE

BIBLE PASSAGE:
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching,
rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…
(2 Timothy 3:16)

MEDITATION:
God has given mankind some awesome gifts and one of the greatest gifts
He has given us is His Word – His book of scriptures, named the Bible.
Without the scriptures, we would not know anything about His Son, Jesus,
nor would we know anything about God, nor would we know anything about
salvation, nor would we know anything about living a righteous life, nor would
we know how to how to interact with others, and with God, etc. etc.

The list could go on and on, but what is important to know is,
God’s breath is in all scriptures. That one fact confirms that we
should diligently read His Word. When we do, we will benefit in
many ways. We will get to know God, His Son, what is required
for salvation, how to love others, and how to pray, just to name
a few.

However, there are additional benefits that we may not have thought
about. We can gain godly wisdom whenever we incorporate reading
the Bible into our everyday lives.
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and
have become convinced of, because you know those
from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you
have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make
you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
    (2 Timothy 3:14-15)
According to these two verses, we can surmise that knowing
(by reading and meditating) the Holy Scriptures will unlock the
door to Godly wisdom.

How early should we start reading God’s Word? The scriptures
tell us we should begin reading when we are infants. No age is
indicated, but we can assume that parents should be reading
scriptures to children until they are old enough to read it by
themselves.
Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that
you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let
them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach
them to your children and to their children after them.
Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God
at Horeb, when he said to me,
“Assemble the people before me to hear my words so
that they may learn to revere me as long as they live
in the land and may teach them to their children.”
    (Deuteronomy 4:9-10)

Start children off on the way they should go, and
even when they are old they will not turn from it.
    (Proverbs 22:6)

Another way we benefit from reading the Bible is,
we become well equipped for doing good works.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for
teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in
righteousness, so that the servant of God may
be thoroughly equipped for every good work
    (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

As believers, we should want to do what the Lord wants us to
do, but we may feel inadequate to successfully accomplish His
assignments for each of us. Consistently reading scriptures will
allay our concerns as we are infused with what we need to be
successful, including the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

The men who framed our Constitution knew they were writing the
basic document for a government of free men. They recognized that
men could live as free and independent beings only if each one knew
and understood the law. They wanted them to know their rights, their
privileges, and their limitations.

Just as the Constitution is the highest law of the land,
the Bible is the highest law of God.
It is in the Bible that God sets forth His spiritual laws.
It is in the Bible that God makes His enduring promises.
It is in the Bible that God reveals
the plan of redemption for the human race.

ACTION:
How often are you reading God’s Word? Do you read the
Bible so you can check off something on a task list, or do
you look forward to reading it often? Unless you consistently
read the scriptures and learn to meditate on them, then
reading the Bible may seem like drudgery to you.

However, once you learn to meditate on them, the scriptures
seem to ‘come alive’, and when they do, you will look forward
to reading them often. If you need help with meditating, look
at a few posts on my Blog (utvolwoody.com).

These postings are designed to help us better understand meditating
and applying God’s principles to our lives (‘where the rubber meets
the road’). And, the good news is, God provides the content for and
allows me to distribute them and make them available for anyone
to read at anytime…for free.

They are not intended to be a substitute for reading the Bible, but
they might give you ideas of how to apply His words to your own
life, and assist you in making any changes required to live a more
righteous life in Christ. When you read them, imagine that God is
speaking directly to you.

Pray,
“Heavenly Father, thank You for the scriptures You have given us!
Impress on me the importance of reading Your Word, so that I may
achieve godly wisdom and be able to do good works – works that help
others and are pleasing to You. Teach me how to not just read Your
Word, but to be able to meditate on the content of what I read, so that
I can apply Your principles to my own life.”
