WHAT DOES GOD LOOK LIKE?

BIBLE PASSAGE:
“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him.”
(Colossians 1:19)

MEDITATION:
One of the greatest mysteries of mankind is,
“What does God look like?”

When Moses was on the mountain top and realized
he was in the presence of Almighty God, he hid
his face for fear of seeing the God of the universe.
Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God
of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”
At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to
look at God. (Exodus 3:6)

Why was he fearful?
There was a belief that if anyone saw the face of God, they would die.
Even the appearance of an angel of God struck fear in people.
Look at what Samson’s father told his mother
when an angel of the Lord appeared and spoke to them.
“We are doomed to die!” he said to his wife. “We have seen God!”
(Judges 13:22)

It can be confusing, because when we read the scriptures,
we see that whenever angels (agents of God) appeared
to anyone, they usually told them to “fear not”.

At any rate, the question remains, “What does God look like?
We may never see the face of God in this life,
but when we read His Word, we can
get a glimpse of Him through His Son, Jesus.
In Colossians 1, we are told that.
“The Son is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn over all creation.” (Colossians 1:15)

Through observing Christ, we can get an idea of God’s character,
(along with His likes and dislikes, His love, His forgiveness,
His salvation plan, and His desires for mankind).
If we want to know God more, then we should read about His Son.

This reminds us of the importance of reading His Word
(not in an effort to see how much we can read, but to
develop an understanding of what the scriptures
are communicating to us individually and collectively).

Think for a moment about the awesomeness of God and
how He authored the Bible as a way to communicate with us.
We may not hear His voice audibly, but we can hear Him
loud and clear whenever we read the scriptures.

Wouldn’t it be great to ‘know’ God now
so we could look forward to seeing Him face to face?
There is coming a time when everyone created will
bow down to God and confess that Jesus is Lord
(all for the glory of God the Father).

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

Those who have been redeemed will gratefully bow and confess,
but there will be many who will begrudgingly bow and confess
that Jesus is Lord (to the glory of God).

Yes, even those who have rejected God’s invitation for
salvation and are doomed to the fate of unbelievers, will
be forced to acknowledge His existence, and His judgment.

One of the primary missions of Jesus was to share the
“good news” that salvation and redemption is available
for all people regardless of their level of sinfulness.
As believers, we are His representatives, and
we have a responsibility to continue His efforts.

ACTION:
Think about the special gifts and talents God has given you.
We can all share the good news in a variety of ways.
Some are called to be pastors, missionaries, teachers, etc.
but some are called to be good listeners, encouragers,
givers, prayer warriors, etc.

Pray,
“Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word and all
that is contained within the Bible. Although I may not
understand everything initially, give me a desire to
spend more time reading the scriptures, so I can better
understand Your character, and Your desires for me as
a child of Yours. Encourage and help me to use what
You have given me for serving You. I pray that You
would develop Your desires in me.”

About Don Woodruff

Retired from FedEx and dedicated to sharing God's Word with others. I send out devotionals weekly and have written two books: "The Crucifixion Catalyst / Unspoken Messages From God To Believers" (published and available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble **out of print**) and "I'm Saved Now What?" (unpublished). I am currently working on a third one that will be a Daily Devotional. The devotionals on my Blog have been viewed by people in all 50 states and over 80 foreign countries. I sincerely believe the Lord provides the content for the devotionals and in 2013 He “tasked” me with distributing them and storing them on my Blog. They are free and I will not solicit any donations. I hope you enjoy them and feel free to leave comments if one of them speaks to you personally, or if you have a suggestion.
