BIBLE PASSAGE:
I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me.
Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am
not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content
whatever the circumstances.
(Philippians 4:10-11)
MEDITATION:
“Contentment” is described as “a state of happiness and satisfaction”.
When we look at the description, it can seem almost unattainable.
There are many external factors that can inhibit our happiness and satisfaction.
Paul faced many difficulties in his day, but he achieved them both.
He came to a point in his life where he realized that the greatest
opportunity for true contentment was a close fellowship with the Lord.
With that relationship as a foundation for living, Paul found that
he could cope with the external turmoil in his life (and he had a lot of it!).
Paul was not implying that he did not need or appreciate the positive
influences of others, but that wasn’t what gave him contentment,
because he had discovered the source of true happiness and satisfaction.
As a result, he had the stamina and ‘grit’ to cope with the challenges of life,
and so, the positive encouragements from others was ‘icing on the cake’.
Look at how much his spiritual maturity taught him:
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have
learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well
fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through
him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:12-13)
Armed with this knowledge, Paul could be content in all circumstances.
ACTION:
All of us experience life challenges that threaten our contentment,
so we should learn from Paul’s experience and advice.
Rather that becoming frustrated, angry, or depressed over the lack of
satisfaction, we should focus on nourishing our relationship with the Lord.
When our fellowship with Him is strong, He can give us the capacity
for coping with the various problems and disappointments in our lives.
It worked for Paul who was abused mentally and physically,
and since God never changes, it will work for us as well.
Pray,
“Heavenly Father, the challenges I face in my life are no surprise to
You. Help me to change my focus from the negativity of my situations
to the promises and blessings You have promised for those who love
and draw near to You. Through the life of Paul, Your Word has shown
me the secret to real contentment. I now realize that when I have a close
relationship with You, I will have a new attitude and capacity for
coping with problems and issues that come into my life. And when with
these changes, I know that I will have a new appreciation for those who
love me and have a positive impact on my life. I know that I will also
understand how I can be a positive influence on others.”
