BIBLE PASSAGE:
The LORD helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from
the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in Him.
(Psalm 37:40)
MEDITATION:
In Biblical times, when a tribe declared war,
they would sometimes hurl a spear into enemy territory.
From a book about the history of Rome:
With these words he hurled his spear into their territory. This was the way in
which at that time satisfaction was demanded from the Latins and war declared.
It made no difference if the enemy was there to see it,
it was an expression of commitment to war from the tribe throwing the spear.
It is similar to the phrase we have heard, “throwing down of the gauntlet”.
We don’t fight our enemy with actual bows and arrows,
but we fight him with the weapons of prayer, and God’s Word.
When we pray, we confront the foe.
When we throw the spear of prayer, we are expressing our faith and trust in God.
Our prayer triggers God’s deliverance, and He moves in to fight our battle for us.
ACTION:
You may want the victory over something today,
but you haven’t let your spear of faith fly into the enemy’s territory.
An active and trusting faith is one that will bring the enemy to his knees.
God does business with those who mean business.
What is the battle you are facing today?
Is there some area of your life that is still under Satan’s control?
How are you preparing for battle?
Spend some time in prayer and in God’s Word before you face the day.
Pray,
“Heavenly Father, I am thankful that You can provide victory for me
over the things I am not strong enough to fight in my own strength.
Forgive me for any attitudes of self-sufficiency that cause me to think
that I don’t need Your help. The evil one is clever in trying to fill my
mind with thoughts that I shouldn’t bother You with some of my battles,
so that You can spend Your time on saving the lost. Protect me from
those traps by Satan so that I will not become more independent, and
forsake my dependence on You, my Heavenly Father who made me,
and has plans (good plans) for me.”
