BIBLE PASSAGE:
For here we do not have an enduring city,
but we are looking for the city that is to come.
(Hebrews 13:14)
MEDITATION:
Who would say that the world we live in is perfect? It can be very
discouraging when we focus on the troubles of our world. Much of
our discouragement is because our attention is ‘out of focus’. When
we belong to the Lord, we need to be looking past the problems of
this world and focusing on the heavenly world awaiting us.
It doesn’t mean we are unaware of the ‘things’ of the world, but we
refuse to be consumed with them and ‘wringing our hands’ worrying
about them. Look at the advice from Jesus to His followers:
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,
what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what
you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body
more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they
do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your
heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more
valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying
add a single hour to your life?”
(Matthew 6:25-27)
One of the basic desires of every person is to live on and on.
Self-preservation is one of the laws of nature. People may get
tired of the aches and pains and the onset of old age, but they
seldom grow tired of life itself.
The good news is, God has made arrangements to satisfy our
yearning to live forever, and our desire to be free from pain,
sickness and trouble.
We are little creatures with huge yearnings;
we are finite beings with infinite desires;
we deserve nothing but demand everything.
Since we were born with such huge cravings, God knew we would
need divine help to quench the desires within us. He knew that we
would need to re-focus our attention. God made our human heart
so big that only He can fill it. He made us with desires that only He
can fulfill, and He is ready to fill them His way and not ours.
He gave us Jesus Christ who is the only One who holds the keys
of death. When He died and was resurrected, He took the sting
out of death. And now, God offers eternal life to every person
who puts his or her faith and trust in His Son, Jesus Christ.
ACTION:
Questions to consider:
– Am I going through life with a dismal outlook?
– Do I feel like everything is pressing down on me and I have no voice?
– Have I developed a short-sighted focus
that extends no farther than the world I am living in?
If our answer to any of these questions is, “Yes”, then we can
only expect what this world has to offer us. Consequently, we
are missing out on the joy of anticipating a greater world; a
world that should be the desire of every person; a world where
we will sit at the table of our magnificent Creator…and it all
begins here, where we are right now.
Pray,
“Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of a new world
that I can look forward to as my new home. It is hard for me
to fathom a world with no pain, sickness or trouble, but that
is what You have promised to all those who have surrendered
their lives to You, and trust You to fulfill Your promises. Lord,
help me to focus on what You have prepared for me so that I
can have a new outlook as I continue my life on earth. Thank
You for Jesus, who took the sting out of death. Show me what
I need to change in my own life so I can find more joy, and so
others will know I am a child of Yours. Help me to be active in
encouraging others to look forward to a new home as well.
Jesus, I trust that when I come to the end of this earthly life,
You will be there to meet me and guide me to my heavenly home.”
