BIBLE PASSAGE:
David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword
and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the
Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”
(1 Samuel 17:45)
MEDITATION:
Where is your dependence? Is it in your back account when you have
financial challenges? Is it in your physician when you have health
issues? Is it in your resume when things are not going well at work?
Whenever we have a problem, our tendency is to take inventory of
our resources, our abilities, and our friends or business acquaintances
to help us deal with it. But, are we overlooking a better source to help
us cope with our problems?
When Israel’s problem was the Philistines, they tried to deal with what
was available and visible to them. The Philistines challenged anyone to
battle their giant – Goliath. When assessing their resources, no one had
the confidence required to meet their challenge.
Then David came forth ready to meet the challenge. If he took inventory
of his resources, he would know that he had many victories in the past, he
had armor available to wear, and he had weapons provided for battle. Did
David rely on any of these resources? No, his confidence and dependence
was on God.
His confidence was not in himself, or any other visible resources available.
Even though he had developed a skill of using his sling he knew that the
Lord was the One who would make him successful. Not only did he face
the challenge, but he wanted everyone to know that the real victor in the
battle would be the Lord – he was just God’s instrument.
“All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword
or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s,
and he will give all of you into our hands.”
(1 Samuel 17:47)
ACTION:
We all face difficulties – some are short in duration and others last
much longer. However, when facing the problems of life, we need to
have our confidence in God, and not in ourselves alone. Whatever
problem you face in life, remember to put your trust in God. He is
capable and ready to help those who belong to Him.
Pray,
“Heavenly Father, forgive me for trying to deal with
problems in my own strength and abilities. Remind
me that because I am a member of Your family, You
are ready and want to help me cope with what may
appear to be insurmountable issues in my life. I know
that when I call on You, You will show me avenues of
coping and resolving issues that I could never discover
on my own. Not only that, but calling on You for help
reminds me of my dependence on You and strengthens
my faith when I experience Your presence and power
in my own life. Thank You for being my loving Heavenly
Father who has the wisdom, power and desire to lovingly
help me through whatever difficulties come my way. I pray
that I will learn to be more dependent on You, and less on
the abilities You have blessed me with.”
